About Lola Montez

The Victorian town of Ballaarat, hot and dusty in the summer of 1885, is at peak Gold fever.

The notorious LOLA MONTEZ is due in Ballaarat to perform her famous Spider Dance at the Victoria Theatre.

She is a fiery Spanish dancer, once a reigning beauty of Europe, Mistress and Political advisor to King Ludwig 1 of Bavaria, but now ageing and no longer rich.

She performs her Spider Dance and the men toss their hard hard won gold at her feet.

The women of Ballaarat are up in arms and threaten to run Lola out of town.

Henry Seekamp, Editor of The "Ballaarat Times", writes a scathing criticism of Lola, and in retaliation, she horse whips him publicly.

It is later discovered she is not Spanish at all, but an Irish woman named Maria Gilbert.

Lola returns to America, where she later died of the same disease to afflict Al Capone.
